Taking a cue from Shawn Gust I have started forcing myself to go out and approach strangers…for portraits. I have done this off and on in the past few years but I have to say it is my weakness.
Like a vampire, I can’t come inside your space unless I’m invited in (traditional myth says that a vampire has to ask to come into someone’s home….weird rule eh?)
Anyways back to the point: I have started to make myself go out and get a new portrait, at least every two days. In this way I will overcome this obstacle.
In this case I carried my Speedgraphic 4×5 around Green Lake, a place where I go running, with the idea that I would find at least one if not many people to photograph on a loop around the lake (while my laundry was drying.)
Specs:
Available light, Type 55 polaroid film, Speedgraphic 4×5 camera, exposure figured out using the sunny 16/cloudy 8 exposure rule (in this case my exposre was 1/50 sec at F8 since it was cloudy and I was using ISO 50 film.)
Toning:
In photoshop I had to dodge and burn each negative pretty thoroughly due to some lens flare I didn’t anticipate (as well as a pretty worn out lense on my 4×5.) I was not able to really do much in Lightroom with these since the file sizes were around 250MB, well beyond the Lightroom 60mb file size limit.

Sweet…..puttin’ the ‘ol 4×5 to work. I dig it. Werewolves, unlike vampires, need no invitation to invade space. We sort of just circle and move in when the time is right. Looks you may soon be converted
Nice pics, Kirk. Oh, and thanks for the nod.

Kirk,
Great post! For not being in your element – approaching strangers… I’d say keep it up…. you have a strong elagance in your portraits…
Love the Vampire tangent… I don’t know much about vampires…. however, (we) witches sit in isolation stirring up our frog eye concoctions casting spells on others….
better watch out!
Take care!!! Keep up the great work!
