I’ve now been back in seattle for 24hrs. In those 24hrs I have managed to catch up on many things, calling clients, calling old friends, doing my taxes and cleaning my house.
As I sit before my Mac I realize that I have created a massive amount of content during my 14 days on the road as an assistant on the film Independent America: Rising from Ruin.
Besides editing and posting 5 short films using the Flip Video camera (all of which were edited either by myself or by my friend John Wayne Liston, in a moving car at night or in a cramped New Orleans hotel with intermittent internet access) I managed to shoot exactly 4470 photos.
Although filming was the first priority, I kept my Canon DSLR on me at all times and I would shoot quickly after an important interview, or from the window of a car on the way to film something else, or while waiting for the director Hanson Hosein to rent a bike or whatever.
Basically any free time I had in New Orleans, I spent taking pictures.
This first picture is of a woman who directs a series of small community farms that were established shortly after hurricane Katrina. Because the food supply was essentially cut off immediately after the storm, food security has become an important issue in New Orleans.
In this interview we talked about food security and how small community farms may alleviate food security problems if another disaster were to strike New Orleans in the future.
Going through my gigantic 50 GB take from New Orleans I realize that I have enough content to keep this blog going for at least a month, which is good, because I am creatively spent for now.
Any new work I make in the next few weeks as I continue to post NOLA pictures here will likely appear on my girlfriend Robin’s most excellent food blog: A Chow Life
Enjoy!

Hey Kirk,
I like the new look of your blog. It has some vague familiarity to it…..(in the words of Ween) can’t put my finger on it. I like the post on the flip video. Nice dude!

The portrait of the woman sitting in the chair with the destruction in the background is quite remarkable. Almost intoxicating – really.
