About a week ago I had the chance to photograph a truly rare event in the world of fixed gear racing: an all girl alley cat.
Until recently fixed gear alley cat races, where the entrants receive a ‘manifest’ they must follow as they pick their own quickest route through a city, were raced primarily by men.
My good friend Laila Ghambari along with some of her friends came up with the idea of a yearly all girl alley cat race to be held in Seattle.
I brought along a backdrop to shoot some of the racers, but due to bad weather the backdrop was pretty much instantly destroyed. It was a good thing, I just went with the available location at Greenlake Park and I got some photos that I liked.
I’m not sure where all this fixed gear culture photography is going. Sometimes I’m pretty stoked to be documenting it and other times I feel sure that it will be a short lived trend more akin to a fashion statement rather than a truly defined culture/sport.
