- I am an outdoor lifestyle photographer and filmmaker based in Seattle WA. I love to push the envelope with my work and I enjoy sharing what I learn along the way.
This blog will show both current work as well as how-to's and insight on becoming a better photographer and DSLR filmmaker.

iPhotos from the Field
My entire Summer has been marked by constant flights out of state to shoot weddings, see family and take mini photo vacations.I have taken over 10 flights this year between Seattle and Spokane alone.
After a few flights I began to pass time by shooting things with my iPhone. Unlike my bags of photo gear, my iPhone is always accessible, usually unnoticed by people (as well as security,) and it is fairly quick to use.
Here are a few photos from those many flights between Seattle and Portland:
Red lines. Seatac Airport. 2008.
White Lines. Seatac Airport. 2008.
To Terminal, Do Not Enter. Seatac Airport. 2008.
Alaska Truck. Seatac Airport. 2008.
Robin, Tarmac. Seatac Airport. 2008.
Baggage Terminal 12, Seatac Airport. 2008.
I continue to be impressed by the quality of my digital Holga (iPhone) and find that it is more than adequate for discreet, quick, intuitive photography.I am waiting for the day that a magazine or newspaper allows regular cell phone photos submissions.
I think the results would be quite a bit better than expected.

iPhone=Digital Holga
The iPhone produces a wonderfully random image, much like a Holga. Colors are uneven across the frame and the photos are kinda soft…

Chairs III. West Seattle WA. 2008.
The iPhone has become my Flip Video camera for still photography.
Like the Flip it is:
1. Discreet.
2. With me all the time.
3. Has no controls to fuss with, only a shutter button.
4. Produces images that are good enough for the web, where most content will live for the foreseeable future.
As the Apple App store expands, we will no doubt see many programs specifically related to the camera function of the iPhone. I predict Adobe will make a simple photo editing app for the iPhone, while others will make improvements to the camera program itself including manual adjustments of exposure and white balance.
With the iPhone you have all the tools you need to write, shoot and publish photo stories (as long as the event occurs in decent lighting conditions.)
At this point I continue to push the image quality of the 2.0 megapixel phone as far as I can.

Is the iPhone 3G camera crappy? Maybe not…
Beach Walk. Lincoln Park, WA. 2008.
One thing I really wanted in the new iPhone 3G was a good…no…GREAT digital camera.
I thought, “well after a whole year, Apple (being a company by and for visual artists) would of course bring the iPhone 3G to market with an amazing digital camera.”
I was underwhelmed.
The same 2 megapixel camera surfaced again, almost like an afterthought to the other groundbreaking technologies that apple crammed into the iPhone.
Today I went out to test the camera a bit and I have to say, shooting with daylight or evening light and a steady hand, the iPhone holds it’s own.
The above photos were shot yesterday and today with my iPhone 3G in decent light. I took the photos into Photoshop, tweaked them a bit (I’m pretty good at this part I admit, having editied around ~70,000 photos so far in my career) and I was surprised to find that with gentle care n Photoshop you could wrangle a decent image.
I’m going to keep working on improving the quality of cell phone pics and hopefully I will have a Photoshop action available soon that you can use to batch process your iPhone pics and get good results.
