The whole time while in Oatman I only took a shot here or there if I felt like it.

Though I am on vacation I was able to produce several cool shots without too much mental effort. I recognized her instantly as the girl I nicknamed ‘Duran Duran’ at the race. She was dressed in a vintage prom dress that she bought to bike in as well as a brown pea-coat. Sonia had fantastic eye makeup and was exactly the kind of person I needed to photograph that day.

I wasn’t sure WHO I was going to photograph because the session was a prize I donated for the the all-girl alley cat race. This way of finding a subject was unique for me because the relationship was inverted. I did not seek out my subject. Rather, through a series of semi-random events, my subject came to me, and ultimately it worked out well.

Sonia has a great personality and was really easy to work with. I decided on 2 rules for this shoot:

1. Use only my 5D + 50mm
2. No directing the poses, and going for as much of a neutral situation as possible.

Both of these rules were a way to get as close to the truth of the moment as I could. Of course, the moment two humans interact at all, there is some chemistry which alters the situation in some way. These two rules were meant to head that off at the pass, as much as was possible. A 50mm lens is pretty close to human sight in terms of angle of vision. By not directing poses and encouraging Sonia from the beginning to self direct her position and to be neutral, I attempted to divert the idea that most people have to ‘smile and say cheese’ when someone is taking their picture.

We all have masks we wear in front of others in life. We show people what they want to see, or at the very least, hide some of our inner feelings to prevent from being vulnerable. It’s only natural.

My favorite portrait photographers break through the masks of their subjects and reveal something true. I’m not saying I nailed it this time. However, I can say that I was being mindful of it. Hopefully, some of that mask came away in these photos.

At the very least, I hope you, dear reader, find them interesting.

-Kirk

More 5D action: Double Rainbows + Christmas Trees

Canon EOS 5D

lo-fi

Adobe Photoshop

Adobe Photoshop Lightroom

Beaverton

Beaverton Oregon

Business

Christmas tree

Digital single-lens reflex camera

Flickr

Oregon

Photography

Recession

Society and Culture

Telephoto lens

Double Rainbow. All of the houses and stores were weatherbeaten by winter storms, and the roads were often muddy from the incessant rain that would fall during my family’s yearly fishing trips there.

Road and Red Jacket. Sekiu, WA. 2008.

On a good day, I would get up at 4:30am with my dad and brother, and head out to fish for King Salmon in the first light of morning. If we limited quickly, we would come back to shore, clean the fish and take a break before heading out again in the evening for Silver Salmon.

Fishing vessel Irish Fiddler. Sekiu, WA. 2008.

During my breaks between fishing I would head to the Outpost Grocery Store and stock up with penny candy. Then I would walk around downtown and through the woods, exploring what I could and making my own fun.

Sekiu never had much besides fishing but I do remember they had Donkey Kong at the grocery store.

About 16 years ago, commercial fishing and illegal international trawlers venturing into the sound from Norway, Russia and China had finally decimated the Salmon population.

Olson’s Resort Docks. Sekiu, WA. 2008.

Sadly, my family ended our tradition of Salmon fishing at Sekiu.

We explored other areas in Canada looking for the same quality of fishing as we had in Sekiu, but nothing we found ever had the same appeal or size of fish.

Now 16 years later, Sekiu is open to fishing again.

We have returned, although this time it is only my parents and I who could make it to fish.

Most stores are closed or converted into homes. Everything is in disrepair after 16 years without an economy. The fishing is ok, but the limits are 1/4 of what they used to be.

Olson’s Resort Cabin, 6am. Sekiu has the same spirit it used to have, and spending time with my parents fishing for Kings brings back some of my fondest memories.
