We’re starting to see this demand for hyperlocal content in Scotland right now. Some of the most established papers in Glasgow are suffering dramatically and, as you know, freelance rates are plummeting and the use of old stock imagery is rising quickly. I think that if some of the approaches you mention can be brought to bear, and quickly, I’ll see some of the titles of my younger years last me out.

Media Bureau in Phialdelphia has had this model since 1997. It is no coincidence that the founder, Benjamin Barnett, lived in Prague in 1990 (teaching English) and traveled extensivly in the region. His time’s at the Press Club, many cafes, homes, speakeasys, etc. helped shape the busienss that was created 7 years later in Philadelphia. Media Bureau put Politics online in Philadelphia with the first webcasts in 1999 and was a driving indie force in 2000 at the US political conventions as one of the few independent voices producing regular (spanish/english)shows from the convention floors in Los Angeles and Philadelphia. The idea of Samistadt (Sp?) and it’s use int he Velvet revolution was ingrained as well … Today (since1999) the Media Bureau has a cafe / newsroom that has produced “thousands” of webcasts and offers this space and solution to budding ijournalists or the like.
